The aim of this project is to incorporate built-in seating features into traditional picnic mats, with the goal of revolutionising outdoor recreation. With a dual goal in mind, this innovation seeks to increase picnicking activity participation while also encouraging increased social interaction, thereby increasing overall time spent outdoors.
This endeavour’s multifaceted research encompasses a wide range of interconnected realms, including market analysis, ergonomic seating postures, social connectedness, the influence of natural environments, and the significance of colour psychology in design. The project was born out of a deep appreciation for nature's allure and an awareness of the limitations of traditional picnic mats, as well as a desire to elevate the essence of outdoor experiences.
Recognising the static nature of existing picnic mats, this initiative seeks to transform these rudimentary surfaces into versatile outdoor furniture that can be customised to meet the needs of a wide range of users. The innovation has the potential to transform the traditional picnic ritual into a holistic experience that goes beyond mere utility. This revolutionary picnic mat aims to improve user posture by embedding ergonomic seating elements, alleviating discomfort and strain typically associated with ground seating. This is achieved through the addition of attachable picnic mat extensions to either side of the mat. This extension encases foam panels which when folded correctly creates seating for users, like origami.
This innovative endeavour aspires to rekindle the joy of outdoor social interaction beyond simply increasing comfort. This innovation promotes mental and physical well-being while also nurturing deeper human connections by creating a more conducive environment for socialising in natural settings. Finally, this project emerges not only as an innovative design proposition, but also as a catalyst for rekindling the cherished bond between people and nature.
