Hello, my name is Nelson Kerley. This is the final project for Industrial Design honours class of 2023, below will explain the project outcome of this device prototype. My background is visual arts and woodwork. Mixing the mediums of creativity with practicality made this work possible. Using these past skills I managed to create a seamless design experience. The proudest moment is utilising Instagram to my advantage - { The_Vibez_Project } - “Connect” below. Thank you for taking the time to look at this project, this is a sleeping aid device for healthcare workers.
The intention of this project is to create a sleeping aid device for healthcare workers. This involves people with insomnia or clinically assessed to have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).
Inside the literature review a discovery was made with multiple research papers which have concluded; “full body Beat Frequency Vibrations (BFV) has the potential to provide a quicker alternative to onset sleep.” (2021 Benjamin J.H, Jonathan D.B) Although why involve healthcare workers? It has been proven that “1/10 patients suffer an injury as a result of the healthcare system. In low-to-middle income countries, as many as 4 in 100 people die from unsafe care.” (Slawomirski L, Klazinga N. - Patient safety ) “in 2016 alone 44.2% of young physicians had Sleep Disorders”. (2022 Likhita Shaik,1 Mustafa S. Cheema) How much of this can we attribute to poor sleep /fatigue?
This product has filled a gap in the market by experimenting with Beat Frequency Vibration to aid healthcare workers who have a problem with falling asleep. This fundamental research will aid healthcare workers in the effort to reduce sleep deprivation, ultimately creating a safer environment for all patients in the healthcare industry.
