From a young age I grew up sketching, making things, and pulling apart objects to learn how they worked. Industrial design is the perfect pathway for me to express these interests whilst enhancing an individual’s life through the products I design. I endeavour to form stories and empower design through key design strategies and techniques, ultimately with the aim to improve quality of life and inspire conversation. I love to explore creative solutions to problem solving across physical and digital forms, driving creativity, realistic, and emotional change.
With the withdrawal of the quadbike in 2021 from the Australian market due to over 240 deaths, there has been a great need for a suitable replacement, particularly in the rural industry for agriculture and service providers. Quadbikes were highly successful for their ability to carry, tow, and perform many applications. However, due to their narrow width and high centre of gravity, they tend to become unstable over uneven terrain causing them to roll.
Motorcycles are recommended by Safe Work Australia to be more stable and manoeuvrable particularly over rough terrain. Studies completed in Australian agricultural settings identify that current electric motorcycles are a suitable replacement, however, farmers required provisions for storage, a dog platform, strong tyres, and larger seats on bikes, all of which are not found in current motorcycles. Ergonomics is also not considered by motorcycle manufacturers in terms of the vibrational impacts to the rider from the engine and varying rider height with a lack of adjustable seating positions. Electric engines prove to be more linear with reduced vibration exposure than combustion engines.
‘Aspect’ is the final outcome of an intense developmental project to produce a suitable electric motorcycle that meets the needs of the rural industry. Through various scale prototypes, ‘Aspect’ was able to achieve a solution to these needs through six main innovations including adjustable seat height, adjustable ride height, gyro stabilisation, storage box, quick release fastening, and receiver hitch integration. The electronically controlled adjustable seat and ride height allows for a comfortable riding position to be made for the user whilst also improving the ease of mounting and dismounting. The gyro stabiliser counteracts the forces presented by the uneven terrain, stabilising the bike at slow speeds, perfect for livestock mustering. The storage box increases storage capacity, whilst the quick release fastening mechanism ensure various attachments can be mounted to the side of motorcycle. Finally, the receiver hitch ensures the vehicle can support multiple attachments such as a dog platform, reel holder, or even a trailer.
