Overcoming Challenges Faced by Female Construction Management Graduates

The construction industry is a predominately male dominated industry that can be daunting for a female construction management graduate. Several statistics highlight the low female participation rates and lack of females in senior / management positions. To date an abundance of research has been completed to understand the challenges that females working in construction face. However, it is unclear how these challenges are being addressed and what support frameworks are available to females. This study therefore, looked to review and address how these challenges are being addressed and the opportunities that are available. Overall, the research findings revealed that there are numerous challenges that present themselves to female construction management graduates, highlighting the need for a support framework to be developed. The findings have found that there is a strong stigma around females in construction. However, data did not support that any specific challenges negatively affect the experiences of females or affect their ability to pursue their career goals and aspirations. The research project has identified several recommendations to be considered to assist in promoting females, with the main recommendation being the inclusion of seminars in schools to encourage construction careers for females and reduce the stigma around the challenges. Construction organisations should consider these key strategies and actions moving forward to assist in increasing the female presence in the industry and help reduce the negative impact of the 'challenges' faced by females working in construction.
