Exploring Housing Issues and Requirements for Older Australians

The aim of this research was to highlight housing requirements and issues related to elderly people in Australia. The focus of the literature review was general housing issues and elderly housing issues. The general housing issues consisted of housing price spirals, affordability and ownership decline, shortage of low-cost housing stock, and social segregation. These issues were in the context of Australia, and, by understanding these issues through literature, allows for specific elderly housing issues to be explored. As a result, the elderly housing issues that were identified comprised of housing design and housing arrangement, social isolation, housing quality, and accessibility. However, these issues were in the context of East Asia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As a result, this fleshed out the research problem, which was the need to understand elderly housing issues in Australia, and this was how the aim of the research was developed. The objectives of this study were to review current studies on housing of elderly people in Australia; to identify the current issues related to housing of elderly people; to examine the living conditions of elderly people; and to establish the requirements of accommodation for elderly people in Australia. The method of qualitative interviews was used in this study as it allowed for complex issues and stories to be explored of individuals to examine the living conditions of elderly people. A total of 22 interviews were conducted, 11 men and 11 women. The interview data was transcribed, analysed, and reported. The analysis methods consisted of thematic analysis and narrative analysis, as they were considered the most appropriate. As a result, these methods allow researchers to explore and establish themes in sets of data which are then analysed with conclusions drawn from them. The findings show that stairs were a great issue in homes because old age made it difficult to travel up and down them. Furthermore, modifications, such as expansion and easily accessible features like cabinetry, were highlighted by participants that these may assist in making everyday activities easier. Also, recommendations like single storey complexes and spacious bathrooms were identified to enhance housing for the elderly. Overall, men were healthy, and women generally had disabilities. The practical implications are the effect on housing policies to promote the construction of dwellings utilising these recommendations. Also, the contribution of this research highlights the need for quantitative study to be done to generalise the results on requirements of housing for elderly people.
