Metà Lamp

Since the inception of the COVID-19 Pandemic and confinement measures that followed, working from home has become more prevalent as a workplace practice and the preferred method of work among young professionals. Recent studies have discovered negative effects of remote work, highlighting individuals inability to switch off from work and a decrease in physical activity. These effects are amplified when combined with compact living spaces, such as small or studio apartments where multiple tasks share the same space. Incorporating effective time management through passive means has been identified as an opportunity for large-scale improvement. In tandem with integrating a better approach to time management and reducing points of distraction and overstimulation, this project focuses on developing a device for the home office to engage and encourage individuals to become more aware of time. Concept The Metà Lamp is a minimalist home office aid, designed for small living environments with an aim to create an awareness of time and promote better time management when working from home. The lamp is controlled with a dial which controls the duration of illumination. Once the selected duration has finished, illumination will diminish, creating an awareness of time passed and encourage individuals to take a break. The hemispherical form is positioned securely on a concaved base enabling the direction of light to be moved to the user's preference. The lamp is equipped with its own power source with an induction charger built into the base, allowing the lamp to move with the user instead of being confined to one space. An intuitive analogue action develops a focus on tactile engagement and the utilisation of light generates a passive means of communicating time. The product will impact on the individual's health by encouraging more frequent breaks and efficient use of time, while reducing overstimulation from digital distraction or audible alerts. Validity When working from home, the efficient use of time, and integration of more frequent breaks has the potential to alleviate stress and prevent burnout, giving individuals more time to do the things they love. However, time management can become a challenge. By giving individuals a focal point to anchor themselves to, they can start to work with the time they have, rather than have the perception of an endless workday and squandering productivity with distractions. Using this technique, the Metà Lamp aims to encourage efficient time management and creates an awareness of time.
