I am a Fourth Year Industrial Design Student with a keen interest in additive manufacturing and physical model making. My goal is to develop as many skills as possible in order to provide me with a unique perspective on the process of design and iteration. My aspirations as a designer are to eventually work in research and development within a company or as a contractor.
This Honours project explored the redesign of the random orbital sander to reduce the risk of long-term illness and musculoskeletal injuries as a result of high levels of vibration produced by sanders when in operation. These vibrations can cause Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAV) which affects the median nerve and can result in numbness and tingling of the hands and fingers as well as the possibility of Vibration White Finger (VWF) causing permanent damage to the nerves. The sander has also been design to suit the 5th percentile female anatomical proportions in an attempt to promote the development of power tools that are suited to varying sizes of people.
