Marianne Nicotera

I have just recently completed my final year of my bachelor's in architecture. Despite currently working for a financial company specialising in residential home loans, I have always had a passion for building and design from a young age. I aspire to continue my studies to complete my Master's in Architectural Design and would love to work alongside a team of architects.

Dismantling the City and Empowering the People

This project focused on providing a data centre for Town Hall Square. The proposal places the civic building directly in front of Town Hall to challenge the historic building intently. The unusual form and dark material allow the building to stand out from the surrounding colonial and corporate buildings and directly mock Town Hall. As well as echoing colonial history, the dark facade also reflects the poor history of the city. The angle of the stand-alone mirror on the south side reflects the Town Hall to illustrate that the history should not be ignored but instead reflected on. The section plan illustrates the direct replication of the Town Hall that has been flipped, intending to mock the building. Unlike the Town Hall's intimating rising stair entrance that prevents the public from entering further, the proposed data centre entrance flows down from the street into the building. The balconies popping out of the building allow visitors to sit at eye-level with the surrounding buildings, enabling them to look head-on. This directed the walkway through the building. The walkways have glass walls that go up and through the building, allowing people to see the system's insides to understand the significant amount of data collected. The nonlinear pathway reflects the chaos of cables and systems. Thus, the lookouts and the ability to see the interior of the civic building allows visitors to view the buildings of those who collect their data, giving power to the people. As a result, through the complex form and facade, the project intends to dismantle the poor history of the city. Similarly, exposing the insides of the data centre and allowing the public to stand at eye level with dominate forces gives power to the people.
