The Journey In Between

The city of Newtown in Johannesburg, South Africa has a rich cultural identity that is celebrated through the medium of street performance. During the week, hundreds gather around street corners in light of performing their art as a means of expression. The ‘Journey in Between’ stems from the need to provide a voice for the informal performers, with the proposal mimicking the nature of street performance. One of the most prominent spaces within the context of Newtown is Mary Fitzgerald Square, a place where democracy has a voice.

The project preserves the site as a gift of open space for people to experience this art. At the end of the journey, the individual arrives at the centre of democracy pondering on the freedom that has been afforded through individual and collaborative achievement. The design serves to provide the opportunity for the young population of Newtown to grow and learn as a community through the celebration and education of performance.
