It is my passion for Architecture that acts as a catalyst for inspiration and therefore provides me with a prominent sense of ambition and desire. Designing instills in me a belief that I can achieve and reach new heights, therefore acting as a foundation for success and fulfillment in the future.

Movement Theatre

Global cities studio has introduced a proposal of a theatre located in Newtown, Johannesburg, after studying the site surrounding facilities, services, connections, and looking into the theatre history and principles. I have discovered after digging deeper into the city history research that in the past theatres were places to express political and social thoughts that were substantially prohibited.

I came across the theory of seen and unseen, and how people react in a more expressive way when their identity is not revealed, and started researching how vailed performance would be much more effective for the expression of thoughts and feelings.

Various types of stages have been allocated around the site considering the scales of the programs. In addition, the stages variation has been designed flexibly to offer the performers different opportunities to adjust the vail transparency to give the chance for a revealing moment through the performance.

My project considered the idea of how the audience could interact with the performances and how the journey which they pass through could form a part of it. The entrance of the journey is located at the corner facing one of the busiest public squares in the city (Mary Fitzgerald Square) and it will lead the audience (in this case performers) into different scale stages and platforms of expressions. The tour is forming a link between the public spaces around the site to create an activation path that gives back this site for public use.
